The Vicar, Revd Margaret Owens writes:
We are currently embarking on a major project to protect the heritage of St Mary’s for this and successive generations: 'Restoring our Heritage'.
Our Parish Church is an iconic building in the heart of our village and as such is greatly valued by the whole community for its beauty and history, as well as its availability for civic, community, and family occasions. It has stood above the centre of Disley for nearly 500 years and, as I am sure you will appreciate, the fabric of such a historic building needs constant care, attention and maintenance. The regular congregation generally meets these ongoing commitments but the work that needs to be done now is of a magnitude that requires the community to pull together.
The essential works include urgent and major repair to the side aisle roofs, but also protection and some cleaning of the stained glass windows and minor improvement of the approach to the church. We estimate that the work will cost in the region of £200k and whilst we are applying for a sizeable heritage grant, we will need to raise a very large proportion by our own efforts. In the current economic climate this is a project we can barely afford – but equally, as a community, we cannot afford to neglect.
To help us in this enormous task we would be grateful for support, not only from the present community of Disley, but from anyone who has appreciated St Mary's in the past, perhaps as the venue for a family baptism, wedding or funeral - by a donation or sponsorship in some form for any of the individual pieces of work. Please Gift Aid donations wherever possible.
Should you wish, either myself or any member of our Fund Raising committee would be delighted to discuss the details of the Appeal with you. Needless to say any discussions and donations will be in the strictest confidence.
Revd Margaret Owens
STOP PRESS
Since the recent launch of the Appeal we have all been saddened by the theft of lead from the church roof. This act of vandalism has caused even more serious and extensive damage to the roof. Now the danger of rainwater ingress and damage to the interior of the church is imminent and the funds required for restoration are considerably greater.
